What documents do I need to sell my car on Motorway?

To sell your vehicle on Motorway, you will need to share a selection of documents to ensure that the sale of your car is legal, and to prove your identity.

First, when profiling your car, you will be prompted to upload images of your service history documents and your MOT certificate (with at least three months’ validity remaining). These allow us to calculate an appropriate reserve price that reflects the quality and condition of your vehicle.

Then, once your car or van is in our sale, we will ask for your driving licence and the first three pages of your V5C logbook. Again, you can upload these copies as photos using your camera or home scanner. We will let you know if the image quality is high enough; if it’s not, we will ask you to re-upload these documents.

We will also collect your bank details, which we will only ever share with a dealer once you’ve confirmed a sale with them, so you can enjoy fast payment.

If your vehicle has outstanding finance, you will need to provide a finance settlement letter. Please note that these are only valid for a short period – and we require any quoted value to be valid for at least ten days.

When your vehicle is being collected by your buyer, you’ll have to physically give them the following things:

  • The owner’s manual
  • The locking wheel nut
  • Spare keys

And the following paperwork:

  • The V5C logbook, minus Section 4 which you keep to transfer ownership of the vehicle. (Once your buyer has collected the car and paid you for it, you will also need to fill out Section 9 of your V5C logbook with the dealer's details and then send the logbook to the DVLA)
  • A valid finance settlement letter (if applicable)
  • Proof of service history (the same documents you uploaded)
  • You’ll have to show your driving licence to confirm your identity
  • If your driving licence lists a different address than your V5C logbook, you’ll need a further proof of address (e.g. a utility bill from the last three months) that matches either the licence or the V5C logbook.

If you’re selling a vehicle on behalf of someone who has passed away, please call our dedicated Documents Team on 0203 885 9291, who will be able to assist you, as the documentation requirements will be different in the case of probate
